I recently watched a special on Chuck Close, and was inspired by his head on shots. He takes photos first, which looks to be a large format Polaroid. But is slightly different. From there he grids them off and paints the self portrait, if you know nothing about Chuck Close, I urge you to find out, he's pretty amazing.
If you've ever had angst about taking your self portrait, his minimalist approach was inspiring, and revealing. I would also say this was also inspired by the Mapplethorpe Polaroids, that are at the Whitney museum. I saw a tiny blurb in last weeks New Yorker, but I'm going to make a point of going to see them, they are there until September 7
