I understand what you're saying, although I may be guilty of doing that from time to time, it is at best intellectual laziness. I would rather have a this sucks than "nice' because it gives you more back.

It is like saying your pic is pretty. What the f* does that actually mean to you or the observer.

I would rather say what it is that moves me even if all I say is I like the composition.

Bottom line is you're right, you aren't very "NICE". Which isn't a bad thing.

in german we say "nett" to things and people which are not very important or very impressive...

a simple question : my english is bad, if I like or love a photo and want to compliment the author in my restricited kwonledge of the language I should avoid to use 'nice' (which is a big compliment in my personal feeling) ???? ok lets then give a FAV, or something more stupid.........

i guess it's more the german translation of the word than it's meaning in other languages. german "critics" usually use "nett" deprecatingly or when being bored of a movie/photograph/picture/song...

I have to agree here. Just banning the word "nice" is not a good solution. One can always use the words "beautiful", "great", and what ever automaticly. And you'll never know if they really looked the pic. I kind of like to know who viewed the picture -- so even if they only leave short nice comment is a good thing. Besides. Try and comment on my post with full page essay and complicated words -- I might not understand it even. It is more likely that something good raises less thoughts than something really bad.

Favoriteing has the feel of collecting for me. If it is just a fav and no comment I get the feeling that someone did a reasearch and faved my pic in process :)

i don't see favs as a form of gratifications, for me the meaning is "love at first sight" (ok this is stupid but love at first sight always is) or " this would be good in my dining room, when i'll be pro i'll print it" (and this is a stealing, i'm a thief, but i try to be a gentleman thief :D)

The sweetest women always don´t want to be called sweet. They get angry in this case. (What is in fact mostly very sweet). So call them impressive, smart and cute and find some big words (and think, hey girl, you are soooo damn sweet) :-)

I'll try to keep that in mind. I think I have never really understood what is the problem with "nice" anyway. It is a positive word in Estonian - so I would guess it is not that bad in English too... I know few more who are allergic to that word... I guess it is used too often, but. I dunno. I don't always find words to describe what I really think or feel about some pic - yet I want to let photographer know that i liked it. And to see the image again -- the ones that you left comment to have habbit of poping up in "comments you have made". It would be weird if everything got "superb" -- that is not even a real word. Oh, right -- "pic" is not a real word too :)

for me take photos is a good escape from language, all the language; i think that the part of communication in which I'm most involved to here in ipernity is made of photos, and the little things i could believe i learnt in this community, i learnt from pictures. :-|

aber ich muss zugeben, das ich ab und zu auch nur kurz kommentiere und sage "great pic" oder sowas. nur um wenigstens zu sagen, dass ich es mag, wenn ich grade nicth mehr drauf eingehen kann, aus zeitgründen meistens. ich finds es dann aber auch selbst blöd...

ich persönlich fänd aber auch glaube ich ein "nice" besser als gar nichts. vielleicht aber auch davon abhängig wer es sagt, also ob ich denjenigen kenne oder nicht. mir ist mittlerweile klar, dass viele zu meinen tiefsinnigen bildern und videos nichts sagen können oder wollen, manchmal bekomme ich dann emails dazu. ich kann das verstehen. über einen kurzen kommentar freu ich mich dann aber auch sehr.

I don't think it should matter - because it's we that read the comments that interpret the commenter's wording. "Nice" can mean so much - it could be a non-English speaker in lack of better words, it could be someone insecure of their own opinion (I know I tended to use "nice" a lot when I started because I was afraid to say something stupid .. ;)), it could mean "niiiiice" in a a very happy way and it could mean just simple "nice" in the most dullest & indifferent way possible ...

Saying its intellectual laziness or whatever its just assuming ...

If people even bother to look at my pics, I'm glad. Most are often strangers, don't own me anything, and if they even bother to type a "nice" or a smiley or a more wordy compliment, I'm grateful :)

Nachdem ich mich von oben durchgekämpft habe(puuh), kommt nun mein Senf dazu: Im deutschen Sinne verwendet würde ich "nett" nicht benutzen - andererseits möchte ich nice nicht mit nett übersetzt wissen, so ist es zumindest von mir nicht gemeint. Es fehlt mir leider die fremdsprachliche Differenzierungsfähigkeit, mein Vorrat an Great, magnificient u.ä. wird aber wieder größer...also habt ein bisschen Geduld mit mir. ein Photo besprechen ist ein Prozess, der mir in meiner Muttersprache schon nicht immer leicht fällt. Nochwas ? @ Annjin I would agree with You. Better People show their visit of Your pictures with the Comment "nice" than remaining quiet. So long...Euch allen ein frohes Neues Jahr aus Ddorf Hermann

Ich würde im Zusammenhang mit Bildern "nice" eher mit "schön" übersetzen, und nicht mit dem deutschen "(ganz) nett". So stimme ich denjenigen zu, die sagen "nicht jeder kann perfekt englisch und verfügt über einen grossen Wortschatz". Und auch für Muttersprachler ist z.B. "How about a nice cup of coffee?" oder "That is a really nice restaurant" keineswegs negativ konnotiert.

Ich finde Deine Bilder .... äh... schön. Etwas besseres fällt mir nicht ein. Bin ja auch kein Kunstkenner, der über diverse Fachausdrücke für "schön" verfügt.
Also bitte nicht übelnehmen :-)
