World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day is an official United Nation’s World Health Day. It is celebrated every year on November 14. The date was chosen because it marks the birthday of Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, is credited with the discovery of insulin in 1921. World Diabetes Day is represented by a blue circle logo. The blue circle is the global symbol of diabetes and signifies the unity of the global diabetes community in response to the diabetes pandemic.

World Diabetes Day was created by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1991, in response to concern over the escalating incidence of diabetes around the world. The International Diabetes Federation leads the World Diabetes Day campaign – produces the annual and biannual themes, runs the global website, creates all the materials and drives the global outreach.

The theme for 2007 and 2008 is Diabetes in Children and Adolescents. The theme for 2009 is Education and Prevention. Recent themes were Diabetes and Obesity (2004), Diabetes and Foot Care (2005) and Diabetes in the Disadvantaged and the Vulnerable (2006).

Through its Unite for Diabetes campaign, IDF led the push for a UN Resolution on diabetes. On December 20, 2006, that goal was realized when the United Nations General Assembly unanimously passed Resolution 61/225, which designates the existing World Diabetes Day as a United Nations world day, to be observed every year beginning in 2007.

World Diabetes Day is a global event. It brings together millions of people in over 160 countries to raise awareness of diabetes, including children and adults affected by diabetes, healthcare professionals, healthcare decision-makers and the media. Numerous local and national events are organized by the member associations of the International Diabetes Federation and by other associations and organizations, healthcare professionals, healthcare authorities, and individuals with an interest in diabetes. World Diabetes Day unites the global diabetes community to produce a powerful voice for diabetes awareness.

Diabetes organizations and individuals worldwide establish a range of activities tailored to a variety of target audiences. Activities organized every year include such things as: lighting of global monuments, buildings and individual homes in blue on November 14, formation of blue circles around the world, global diabetes walks and rides, a WDD car in the Baja 1000 race, WDD motorcycle, press conferences, in-school activities, sports activities, frisbee events, free screenings for diabetes and its complications, workshops and exhibitions, and geocaching with World Diabetes Day commemorative coins.

Wish

Sometimes I wish I felt the need to own a car, have a mortgage, work in a big corporation, travel to expensive places or buy and accumulate things I don't really need, like normal people do. But, sadly, I don't. That would make my life way easier.

What’s wrong with the world?

We are buried beneath the weight of information, which is being confused with knowledge; quantity is being confused with abundance and wealth with happiness.

Suerte

La verdad es que este año estoy teniendo una suerte de la hostia, la gente que me cae bien o se muere o se marcha.

Frustration

It's frustrating to work hard on a collective blog and then discover that most of its registered users are not even subscribed to its feed and therefore don't read its contents.

Christmas decorations

It's only October and, like every year, Christmas decorations are starting to appear all over the city. I've never been a fan of Christmas, but this year particularly the mere thought of it turns my stomach and scares me. So, a big "fuck you" goes out to whoever came up with the idea of putting the decorations up months before.

In Transit

I've posted a photographic series shot at Brussels Airport called "In Transit" on my photoblog. It's about my dislike of airports in particular and the feeling of loneliness even when surrounded by people in general.

The perfect business

The economic interest of the pharmaceutical industry itself is the main reason why no medical breakthrough has been made for the control of the most common diseases such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, heart failure, diabetes, cancer, and osteoporosis, and why these diseases continue like epidemics on a worldwide scale.

Millions of people and patients around the world are defrauded twice: A major portion of their income is used to finance the exploding profits of the pharmaceutical industry. In return, they are offered a medicine that does not even cure.

Back from Belgium

I'm back from Belgium. It has been a nice, but too short, trip. I guess good things never last long enough.

Belgium

From September 25 to 28 I'll be in Belgium. To tell the truth, I don't feel like going anywhere this year, but the people I'm travelling with have kept trying to pull me out from home all summer, so I guess I couldn't say no. At least the trip it's cheap.

I know almost nothing about Belgium, so I have no expectations about it. The plan is to visit Brussels, Ghent and Bruges. Someone has told me not to miss Bruges at night, I hope it's worth it.

Sometimes

Sometimes I wonder if all the work I put into maintaining and writing in this site is worth the effort, because I get almost nothing good in return, not even a simple "thanks", and get all the finger pointing when things go bad.

Otro día, otro año

Nunca me han gustado los cumpleaños, y este año en concreto aún menos. Ninguna felicitación ni ningún regalo va a llenar el vacío que dejaste cuando te fuiste para siempre.
