A Legacy for President George W. Bush

Sunday April 5, 2009 at 11:14AM

George W. Bush, may be remembered for being the symbol of everything wrong in the United States. He did not invent radical right wing ideologies; but he became their most obvious proponent. He frightened those who recognized what he represented. He forced all of us to look at issues we preferred to ignore.

We humans must recognize our transgressions before we can do something about them. Only by looking in the mirror, can we see the dirt on our face.

Informed participation is vital for a healthy democracy.

US citizens finally did recognize the dangerous ideologies and rejected them. But, their tardiness allowed the worst economic disaster in a century to cause harm and suffering around the world.

It was not the legacy President Bush wanted; but he forced us to pay attention and change course.

Boy oh boy, it was an unintended legacy and if it is all, it would not be too bad! UNFORTUNATELY!

One of these days I read that Sarah Palin manages to be in the (US-)news, one way or the other, e v e r y day - beware!

Hello Max.
The Bush regime, like so many others, demonstrated the dangers of what happens when religious fundamentalists govern a country. Whether it be the Taliban in Afghanistan or the Southern Baptists in the US, the results are the same.
The damage done during the Bush era will take years to undo,
Interestingly enough, the rest of the world and especially Germany and Europe, saw the dangers long before the people of the US did or wanted to see it. We also saw the greed, hypocrisy and war-mongering that became the legacy of the Bush years.
Let us only hope that as you say it forces us (and especially the US voters) to pay attention and change course. Unfortunately those who will not learn from the mistakes of history are bound to repeat them.
Regards. John S. South Australia.

Merodemapro replies:
from "Europe" England may well be excluded, when hypocrisy, war-mongering and greed are concerned - just today the Daily Telegraph published uncensored pages from the expenses scandal, and the role of the former prime-minister, a devout catholic, in the invasion of Iraq or his looking the other way when Gazans were butchered earlier this year cannot be underestimated - religion and politics are indeed a deadly combination

I'm more afraid of the policies of the Obama administration. I believe the things he is doing (and not doing) puts the US at a much graver risk that Bush ever did.
