Die Argumente sind längst klar: Tut nicht, schützt nicht die Kinder, öffnet unkontrollierbaren Seitensperrungen Tür und Tor (siehe neulich die Sperre vom W3C).

Bitte mitzeichnen! Auch wenn es die kleine Mühe einer Registrierung erfordert... Besonders die flickr-Flüchtlinge hier sollten sich angesprochen fühlen ;-)

Found a funny game on facebook:

The objective is to create a CD cover. You need, of course, a band name, an album title and an image. These shall be retrieved as follows.

1. Find your band name as the page title of the first random Wikipedia artice you get hold of.
2. Choose the album title to be the last 4 or 5 words of the last qoute at the bottom of this page
3. Find a random photo on flickr which allows reuse for what you are going to do, use the most recent one you find (this rule adapted to meet legal requirements)

Fiinally photoshop the three together to become your CD-cover. Have fun! And do not cheat...

wer hat Lust, morgen (So, 1.3.09) an einem Ü-Ei-Turnier teilzunehmen?

Regeln:

• Man nehme ein Ü-Ei und mache am Turniertag drei Fotos. Auf jedem Foto muss deutlich sichtbar ein Teil des Ü-Eis vorkommen. Alles weitere ist Eurer Fantasie überlassen.
• Die Themen für die drei Bilder sind 1. "eieiei", 2. "the way out", 3. "play mate" und sollen kreativ ausgelegt werden.
• Die Bilder (drei pro Teilnehmer) werden dann in der richtigen Reihenfolgen und zusammenhängend die Gruppe Assignment Duel gepostet (die Gruppe ist privat, wer teilnehmen will, wird eingeladen)
• Anschliessend wird im Thread abgestimmt.

Für den Fall, das mehr als fünf (5) Teilnehmer zusammenkommen, lobe ich hiermit zwei Preise aus (Ü-Eier natürlich!). Eines für den Gewinner des Turniers gemäß Abstimmung, ein weiteres als Preis für das kreativste Einzelfoto (für die Jury bemühe ich mich um eine sachkundige Person).

Da entsteht im Internetz, von vielen unbemerkt, ein völlig neues cineastisches Format. Sozusagen ein Chat-Krimi: die meiste Zeit sieht man praktisch "nur" Chat-Fenster auf dem Schirm, aber die haben es in sich. Vor den Augen des Betrachters entwickelt sich eine spanennde und vielschichtige Story aus der Raubkopiererszene (1. Staffel) bzw. Waffenhandel (2. Staffel).

Viel Spaß dabei...

Nebenbei: die erste Staffel enthält einen Logikfehler. Wer ihn findet, darf ich behalten, kann ihn aber auch hier als Kommentar hinterlassen (aber bitte kein Spoiler, gell...)

Does anyone have any tips for concert photos? I've never really been able to take good pictures during a concert. Although, this is the first time with my new camera. :] I just got a Nikon D80, and I'm going to be in the balcony...I'm not too sure how the lighting will be...but probably kind of crazy. It's like a rock concert. Any suggestions?

I was about to post a few tips but then I began adding more and more and I ended up with something I do not want to be buried in the LiveJournal blog. So here it is...

Hi Jessica,

so you want to try it? Here is how you will make it!

• Get close (or you will have too harsh contrasts). Forget about the balcony. Except you have something like a 200/2.0 or so.
• Most of your problem will be light, so:
  -- Choose high ISO 1600+,
  -- b/w if neccessary to act against the noise.
  -- Open up your lens as much as possible (1.4 is fine, at the risk of too low depth of field).
  -- Shoot in burst mode (3 to 5 in a row) to get at least one of the pictures sharper than the rest.
  -- If you own just the kit lens or so, don't invest too much time in photography, rather enjoy the music.
• Shoot RAW - it will give you two extra bits of dynamic range compared to jpg.
• Shoot many images and allow for 95+% of rejects. Take your biggest memory card and a replacement. In 2 hours, I take 500+ takes and I end up with a 5-10 stunning ones. Hmm, and do not forget to take your spare battery with you, fully charged at best... ;-)
• Make back light your friend! Hide spotlights behind the artists, use the smoke (if available) to support your lighting.
• When it's your first time shooting under such conditions, you will presumably choose automatic exposure metering. Use Av mode (aperture priority) and choose the most narrow exposure metering your camera does support (usually depicted with a dot in the display).
• Oh, and make yourself comfortable with the camera in advance. And preset the camera as described above. No use trying to fumble with technology when everybody else enjoys the event.
• In any case, don't limit yourself to the stage. There will be plenty of scenes there hat are equally or even more suitable to transport the atmosphere of a concert. Begin with the bar.
• Never even think about using the built in flash. Not for stage of course, and please also not for the atmospheric images of what else was going on. Pleeeease!!!
• When you are acting to the first advice and get close, turn around and look to the side. Screaming fans close to the stage -- great subject.
• Make sure in advance that taking and publishing images is permitted by the operator and the artist(s). When publishing takes of other people, please consider local laws.

Bonus tip: should you have a camera in your mobile phone, try it also. They often perform extraordinary well or at least produce interesting images of such scenes. Again, remember turning of the "flash".

And, most important, have fun! With the concert and with the photography. Should, for some reasons, which is almost impossible now :), the images turn out lousy, nobody can take you the music.

I was asked for my long term experience with this tablet. So here we go:

After using it for more than a year I cannot imagine to be without. While not being the absolute device when typing and editing text (I am holding the pen in my hand at the very moment), it is an inevitable tool when sorting and editing images. Pity that it does not support pressure sensitivity with GIMP.

And --please Wacom read this-- I wish that the usable surface would be surrounded by a bit less useless plastics. Allowing more area for the pen. And using less desk space, which is a bit slender here around, as you can see on the image. The waste of desk space is even worse with the bigger tablets which is the only reason why I do not upgrade to an A5+ version.

A funny thing is that at times other people are using my Mac and the treshold when they first face the tablet is comparatively high. But even absolute non-tech folks learn to deal with it in minutes. Only hurdle is to hit the exactly same spot twice when double-clicking.

Oh, what I forgot to say: I am using the board not in mouse mode but in 1:1 screen mapping which means that the absolute pen positions are mapped to absolute screen positions. Even with the recent drivers this mode does not fully support user changes in my iMac, i.e. when switching between users the new user is at times left with the tablet space mapped to a tiny screen area so that one has to change users again to get it back into a usable mode. But this is very sporadic. At least I had a chance to learn that support is responsive, while not very helpful...

Overall, and given the reasonable price of 99 Euros at that time, 80 by now, it is an absolute buy when image editing accounts for more than 10% of your computer time.

Ich liebe es, Porträts zu machen. Und zwar solche, die wirklich das Wesen des Modells genau zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme wiedergeben. Jeder Lidschlag der "decisive moment" sozuagen.

Leider finden sich die meisten "Opfer" nicht gut getroffen, wenn man ihre Bilder entsprechend charaktervoll entwickelt (mit kräftigen lokalen Kontrasten, ggf auch als s/w und oder auch mit Korn). Andererseits möchte ich aber auch nicht durch die babyglatten Bearbeitungen wie fürs Titelbild von TV Spielfilm und Co. auch aus dem ausdrucksvollsten Gesicht noch den letzten Rest von Persönlichkeit rausprügeln. Obwohl ich mir sicher wäre, das das insgesamt besser ankommen würde :-( Da scheint bei vielen (bewusst oder unbewusst) das von der Werbung über uns gebrachte Schönheitideal zuzuschlagen, für das jedes Fältchen und jeder Bauchansatz gleich zum Defizit wird...

Anyway, jedenfalls bin ich auf der Suche nach einer Darstellungsform, die etwas (etwas mehr) von der Person im Bild lässt, ohne das Selbsterleben des (bzw vor allem der) Abgebildeten zu hart auf die Probe zu stellen.

Dem Vorschlag, mal etwas über Sonnensegel, Markisen, Plissee und Sannenschutz zu schreiben kann  man sich nur anschließen. Allerdings ist der Haken, dass man wirklich einen eigenen Text schreiben muss, damit es Sinn macht. Aber warum auch nicht? Schließlich sind Gardinen und Raumtextilien genau wie Markisen und Sonnensegel ja ganz wichtige Dinge, mit denen man sich an heißen Tagen unbedingt auseinandersetzen muss. Wobei mich wundert, wer nach Sonnensegel sucht… Aber naja.

Vielleicht sollte man überdies der Zielgruppe des Spammers erklären, was hier eigentlich abläuft: Damit Sie, ja: Sie, wenn Sie bei Google nach Sonnensegel, Sonne nschutz, Markise, Jalousie, Plissee oder ähnlichen Dingen suchen nicht auf die Seiten seriöser Anbieter aufmerksam werden, sondern stattdessen auf die Seiten eines bestimmten Unternehmens geleitet werden, wird dem Spammer Geld bezahlt, damit er überall wo das nicht hingehört seine Stichworte und den bewussten Link hinterlässt. Der Suchmaschine Google, der Sie sich vermutlich ebenfalls bedient haben, um diese Seite zu finden, wird damit vorgegaukelt, dass ganz viele Leute den Link soooo toll finden, dass sie ihn auf ihre Seite aufgenommen haben. Wow, muss das eine wichtige Seite sein, wenn es um Sonnensgel geht. Also wird sie in der Liste der Suchergebnisse nach Sonnensegeln, Markisen, Gardinenstangen, Rollo, Rollos, Sonnenschutz usw. weit nach oben sortiert.

Was also erreicht werden soll ist, dass Sie, ja Sie, betrogen werden sollen. Und zwar um die vom Suchmaschinenanbieter gewünschte und für Sie nützliche Priorisierung: Interessante Links werden nach oben sortiert. Nein, wenn Sie nach Sonnensegel oder einem der anderen Begriffe suchen, zum Beispiel “Markise”, dann bekommt diese bewusste Firma mehr Aufmerksamkeit, als ihr eigentlich zusteht.

Und weil das nicht nur unfair gegenüber den mit offenen Karten spielenden Anbietern von Dingen wie Sonnensegel, Markise, Sonnenschutz oder Jalousie ist, sondern auch diejenigen Leute nervt, deren Kommentarfunktion derartig missbraucht wird, kann man nun auf den Gedanken kommen, mit der Macht der Vielen mal eine Gegenaktion aufzusetzen. Wenn da nun viele Leute einen Link auf diesen Artikel setzen, kann der sich in der Sortierung vielleicht nach oben schieben und damit wenigstens auf die Unlauterkeit der Vorgehensweise zur Bewerbung von Sonnensegeln aufnerksam machen. Und von Markinsen oder Jalousien, wenn man so will.

Mit einem Augenzwinkern jedenfalls ;-)

Es war eine kleine Bühne aber eine große Rauchmaschine. Deswegen war es mit Bildern diesmal schwierig. Ein paar passable gibt's ab hier... Dafür hatte es eine Super-Stimmung in einer wirklich gemütlichen und überschaubaren Location.
