Good Bye Lenin!

Last night I saw "Good Bye Lenin!" on TV. A German film by Wolfgang Becker (IMDb.com rating 7.8/10) that was released in 2003. See Wikipedia article on Good Bye, Lenin!

I liked it a lot and I think it's a good example of European cinema - so much different from Hollywood, and so much better.

On one hand the film can be seen as a part of ostalgie phenomenon and it certainly brings backs memories from the old days. I also lived long, dreadful years under the communist regime. But for me the real value of the film is that it is about feelings and that it speaks to your heart.

Ipernity - new possibilities ?

Unlike F*r and other photo sharing websites Ipernity gives its users opportunity to write their blogs and upload documents in various file formats.

Photo sharing websites are for sharing, presenting, appreciating and indulging in () photography. It is good to know your creativity and passion for photography is appreciated by a group of friendly like-minded people.

A photographer discovers and documents multitude of surrounding world views, sometimes she/he transforms a view of the real world to express his thoughts or state of mind and heart.

Ipernity might also be a place for sharing, discussing  and discovering others'

  • favourite music
  • favourite films
  • favourite art
  • interesting, helpful or valuable websites

just to name a few. Opportunities are only limited by your imagination.

Little secrets of the house

I hope people behind Ipernity won't be mad at me for revealing some secrets of the website.

Users at Ipernity are identified either by their nicknames or internally by numbers.

It is not very difficult to find out that #1 at Ipernity is our hero Christophe Ruelle. #100 is also special because the name of the account is... Ipernity. Apparently developers restricted or blocked IDs 2 through 9999 and the next active account is #10000 and it belongs to a close relative of our dear Christophe, it seems.

Account #10002 is a bit special because of the person to whom it seemingly belongs Sergey Brin. If you don't know (almost impossible) who he is look it up in Wikipedia - Sergey Brin.

Larry Page hasn't got an account on Ipernity yet (shame on you Larry ).

The last active account when I checked was the account number #22316 (a person from Lyon).

Update (Aug 16, 2007): The most current account ID number is 22472.

That tells us there are about 12,400 open user accounts on Ipernity, but please bear in mind that there are thousands of accounts that are completely inactive (no docs, blog posts etc).

Update (Sept 7, 2007) The most current account ID number is #24186 =~ 14,100 open user accounts.

Original or favourite ?

It would be a good thing to have a means to flag and then easily find out docs uploaded as original creations of Ipernity users and which have been created by someone else and only uploaded for others to appreciate (or some other reason).

Almost all photos are taken by the original uploader  but it is usually not the case with other docs.

For the time being the best solution would be in my opinion to tag docs with the "original woa" tag (for original work of art).

What's your opinion?

Simple discovery system

I am amazed how much fine and artistic creations I find on Ipernity. It strikes me that it is happens very very often by a sheer chance.

I'd love to have a system that would follow items that have been favourited by a set of my contacts.

Another menu item in 'Explore' menu - 'Explore your contacts' favourites'. I think It would help me and let me easier find what I seek here on everyday basis.
