Some snatches from a stream of consciousness ... informed by memory (Here's another ... from Leonard Cohen ... 'I got this rig, it runs on memory ...') ... always associated with lyrics and poetry ... with words that stuck. Somehow relating a time in the late sixties when I found myself in a similar internal situation ... possibly?

The possibility of the future and the constraints of the past. A conundrum.

As ever, I write out my internal dialogue.

Hopeful Monster is the colloquial term used in evolutionary biology to describe an event of instantaneous-speciation, saltation, or systemic mutation, which contributes positively to the production of new major evolutionary groups. The memorable phrase was coined by the German born geneticist Richard Goldschmidt (1878-1958), who believed that small gradual changes could not bridge a hypothetical divide between microevolution and macroevolution.

In Richard Goldschmidt's seminal contribution to evolutionary biology, The Material Basis of Evolution, he writes: "The change from species to species is not a change involving more and more additional atomistic changes, but a complete change of the primary pattern or reaction system into a new one, which afterwards may again produce intraspecific variation by micromutation." (1940, pp. 205-206)

... and yes, as ever, I am far too under-control, even as I let go little bits of thought ... :)

Thanks for the wilkipedia's explanation. Even without the technical explanation I understood the "hopeful monster" presupposes a movement (saltation / mutation) from one individual into a new one (monster?).

As usual you wrote out your internal dialogue. Otherwise I would not like to lose my time reading your texts with pleasure and appreciation. You know...Dave...you wrote a great text!

Thanks for the origin of "hoisted .. petard", which I've never clearly
known before (or needed to know, I guess) I thought it was some sort of
a spear. The bits of your thoughts, interjected into the collective
monster mind here at work, may suffice to cause Atomistic Changes or
micromutation, and I love when that happens!
Productive train-of-thought ride to work!!

Wrestling with angels in the quotidian mud ... always a worthwhile exercise. I come away with a clearer sense of why I do things the way I do ... and why I wouldn't have things any other way ... take me to the river ...

... teabreak over, time to climb the Ash tree ... watch out for Ravens ... fill the cauldron ... and cut the corn ... jeez, but it's been a long three days!

Sacrifice is given willingly and for a purpose, otherwise it is just suffering. While sometimes the weight of the load makes me complain ... in the end I choose my path. One more year on the treadmill, in the cell, should see those I love set up. In the meantime I will sing my goat song.

i always try to tell something, though people are mostly not willing to listen ;))
