Awards? I think they're inevitables, but let's look at how Christophe has implemented the groups functionality.
Contests? I've seen some flames about theam. I don't understand. Noone can constrain you to participate.

That's true, and I don't take part... But it's for fun and we shouldn't compete too much... We shouldn't take it too serious, as some do. That's a pity

I am excited about the groups. Whether they have awards, contests, etc., has no relevance to me. I will just turn the channel, or choose not to participate. Pretty simple.

I am looking forward to seeing a lot of photography that I have missed simply because I might not know or be a contact of a member.

someone yesterday talked me about those groups, and of what he said i understand finally it's like the real life, people with same people against other people if i well understand the mecanic of the groups intentions... why not...i'm not here to find the same thing i already have and don't care about, in my life...maybe i' m condescendant but i'm not looking for awards or fav or people in group coming and see my page just to say they are better than me...have regular five friends is already much for me even if i'm keep on looking for new things to see...i don't like dictature of self-congratulation ( it's why i live apart of the actual society of disloyal competition : a lot against one...but maybe i'm wrong and those groups are different of groups in the real life...) but why people are so afraid of their coming, that, i do not really understand ( as many other things, i guess ) ...
i have no desire about ipernity but agree with your second proposition...

Groups to me will be a way to meet new people (and see new work) that don't already belong to my "extended" network.

Groups are ok if the contact between the people will be similiar like now.
(Hey guys... don't forget me... hehe... )

But I don't want to have groups where I must write comments or I should take a code for writing a comment. If I want to leave comments it's my choice if I do and how I do...

But I am not sure what I should think about groups where only invited pics are post-able...

Otherwise... I think I couldn't be a good moderator... >;o)

Groups are just groups, nothing special. Ipernity already is a group! A sub-group of flickr ;-P *ducks to escape flying objects of various sizes being thrown at her*
