Spamming in comments

Thursday June 19, 2008 at 03:50AM

Every once in while someone posts a comment to one of my photos with a photo and a link of their own - occasionally even medium sized!

I personally feel that the only image in a photo page should be that photo. Posting another photo, even if somehow related, is like stealing "center stage", deviating the reader's attention from the photo to something else. In a way, it is like spamming - trying to attract people to go somewhere else instead of appreciating that photo. So when I want to include a reference, I simply post a normal text link (URL) to the relevant image.

When someone does this to one my photos, I write to them and try politely make them see my point and ask them to replace the photo. Most are quite understanding and I've never had any problems.

Recently, however, a person wrote to me saying that he really could not understand why would this kind of behaviour bother anybody. After I explained to him, he claimed to understand my point, but was reluctant to change his ways, since this was how he managed to drive traffic to his own pages, and that ws his main goal. In the end, I just deleted the comment altogether.

Having said this, I realize that part of the fun in participating in a social network is precisely the opportunity to INTERACT (i.e., bi-directional communication) with other people, and occasionally it makes sense to include images in the conversation. I find that blogging is perfect for this, as it allows you to make your statement, and other to comment at will, even posting their own images if they want to. This is one the things I really enjoy here in Ipernity.

So, to start the discussion, here is the question - how do you feel about this - does it bother you when someone posts their own picture (with a link) as a comment to your photo?

That really Cicada Bug bugs me too!

...Just joking around, delete this if you want to.

I really don't mind that kind of thing, unless their photo is better than mine, lol.
(which it usually is!)

Actually here on Ipernity, I don't get many comments at all, so I am pleased to get any comment.

I've sometimes done it in the past, but not to attract traffic to my stream, but I've made it only because I know there is a delete link.
I've a very liberal approach to my stream and I never deleted something, but, yes, recently there is a flood of glitter pictures in medium size which is a little bit annoying; anyway they are always related with some sort of greetings and I appreciate the intention.
I've seen only a couple of people spamming, but I think this is a problem of THEIR...

I can understand Your point of View, Daniel. In the other way I like to talk to people through pictures, not only to comment by words, so sometimes I post a thumb of my photo which has a relation to the original photo, just to show my point of view to my friends (contacts) - really not to attract more traffic to my stream.

If the photo in a comment is larger than thumbnail, then I would consider it spam. A text link is more respectful I think :)

words or pictures, no problem; iIt's all the same to me.
no reason to be angry.
I like it to post a thumbnail of one of my pics under another

Hi DANIEL, I guess text links are ok.
Nevertheless it could be useful to have a personal black-list available: who spam will be blocked for any further comment.

To keep it short: I don't mind. I do this in rare ocassion by myself. Only a text link would drive visitors definitly away. If you include a blog-size picture or a thumbnail the visitor can decide if it's worth to go the way the link leads to or to stay an follow the discussion.

I can see your point there, but I must also say that to me it's fun to see how two persons saw the same thing in an entirely different way; or saw two different things in the same way. If someone adds a photo with that in mind, I like it. However, if someone would do that because they want to have visits to their own page, it is a bit pathetic.

Sure, I also like this kind of feedback, but this can be achieved by inserting an html link to the picture. The pathetic thing (as you well put) is that some do it really to get the attention - I've had more than one tell me straight out that that's what they do to get page views, on purpose!
