ipernity is proud to enable the first social mashup of the brand new Google Translate API.
Members and visitors can now request "on the fly" translations of posts, comments, discussions, descriptions, iperMails... written in foreigner languages*.

Translation is made from/into 23 languages*. Of course, automated translation is not perfect but we are convinced it brings ipernity members and visitors a real added value for a global understanding.
Thanks to this new feature, ipernity becomes the first social internet media facilitating exchanges between people from various horizons ;-)
(*) Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish. Esperanto and Catalan are not yet supported by Google Translate. We'll add these languages as soon as we find translation services with free API use.

First of all, it doesn't work for me - it's just an lead to the picture itself (#), and second: If I want to translate my text, I usually do it myself anyway.

I am constantly helping people to understand how an automatic translation works, and that it's in no way a substitute for a manual translation. And I just don't like the link under my pictures.
This has nothing to do with the very helpful new feature under any given comment, though. THAT is cool!
assbach pro replies:
anyway, maybe it's an idea that the team can add a preference for this to appear or not.

So far, the link doesn't work for me. If I click it, nothing happens - and sometimes there is not even a text to translate and the link seems to be unnecessary.
And also, I often write funny comments in dialect. When I feel my English speaking visitors should understand them, I translate them myself. In these cases, the automatic translation would be completely wrong anyway.
And some of my pictures have bilingual text already. There, too, the link would be redundant.
Bottom line: I would like to make it an option, not the default.

I noticed if the text is already in English, and I click on the translate-link, there's a very nice message:
This text already seems to be in your language. According to Google ;-) - I can live with that.
And under the bilingual text it's actually pretty funny to compare my manual translation with the automatic Google translation - just what I have been preaching for years ;-)

- there is no "translate" link if the text is written in the same language you use to browse ipernity
- there is no "translate" link if we cannot detect the language or if the detected language is not supported by Google Translate
- there is sometimes a delay (a few minutes) between the moment when a comment is posted, and the moment when the "translate" link appears. This delay depends on the availability of Google Translate services.
Pandarine pro replies:
Oops, Google has not been able to translate this text.

I'd second Pandarine's wish to turn this option off, because the author's translation will always be better, but still, it's good of you guys to see and provide this option, because it will be a real help to many, many people here. Merci beaucoup.

It's extremely bad between German and English, because so many words in German have different meanings (i.e. Hahn, which could be either a rooster or a faucet). But if you use it to understand the general context of a comment, it could be a welcome feature.
Christophe Ruelle pro replies:
Sometimes google translation is realy amazing.
Anyway, there was no intention to provide a perfect translation here. We rely on google and we show where the translation comes from because it's not our job.
I understand your point of view and I also understand that you think it's quite usefull for some people and in some cases. We know the limits and we hope everyone does. Anyway, it help right?
(But why did I write in english?...)
