Google Translate + ipernity = new power "translate" feature

Tuesday July 8, 2008 at 01:18PM

ipernity is proud to enable the first social mashup of the brand new Google Translate API.

Members and visitors can now request "on the fly" translations of posts, comments, discussions, descriptions, iperMails... written in foreigner languages*.

Translation is made from/into 23 languages*. Of course, automated translation is not perfect but we are convinced it brings ipernity members and visitors a real added value for a global understanding.

Thanks to this new feature, ipernity becomes the first social internet media facilitating exchanges between people from various horizons ;-)

(*) Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish. Esperanto and Catalan are not yet supported by Google Translate. We'll add these languages as soon as we find translation services with free API use.

Pandarine pro says:
Is there any way to keep the link from showing up directly under my pictures?

First of all, it doesn't work for me - it's just an lead to the picture itself (#), and second: If I want to translate my text, I usually do it myself anyway.
Posted 4 months ago. ( permalink )
assbach pro replies:
what about your visitors? they can use the link. it's not for you (only) i think.
Posted 4 months ago. ( permalink )
Pandarine pro replies:
Like I said: If I want my visitors to read the text in English, I will translate it (manually!) myself, as I am strictly opposed to automatic translations - and since years preaching against them.

I am constantly helping people to understand how an automatic translation works, and that it's in no way a substitute for a manual translation. And I just don't like the link under my pictures.

This has nothing to do with the very helpful new feature under any given comment, though. THAT is cool!

assbach pro replies:
i know what you mean, and i agree to the "look" or placement of it, but what about saying it in a nice way? and still i think it will help a lot of ipernitys users.

anyway, maybe it's an idea that the team can add a preference for this to appear or not.

Pandarine pro replies:
Sorry if my comment came across as not being "nice". I thought simply asked if there's a way to disable this feature under my own pictures?

Team ipernity pro replies:
Are you talking about aesthetic considerations?
Posted 4 months ago. ( permalink )
Pandarine pro replies:
Not only those.

So far, the link doesn't work for me. If I click it, nothing happens - and sometimes there is not even a text to translate and the link seems to be unnecessary.

And also, I often write funny comments in dialect. When I feel my English speaking visitors should understand them, I translate them myself. In these cases, the automatic translation would be completely wrong anyway.

And some of my pictures have bilingual text already. There, too, the link would be redundant.

Bottom line: I would like to make it an option, not the default.

Pandarine pro replies:
Update: Now, that the bug is fixed, it doesn't seem so bad anymore, after all.

I noticed if the text is already in English, and I click on the translate-link, there's a very nice message:

This text already seems to be in your language. According to Google ;-) - I can live with that.

And under the bilingual text it's actually pretty funny to compare my manual translation with the automatic Google translation - just what I have been preaching for years ;-)

There was a small bug: the translate link appeared even if the description was empty.
It's now fixed: the link appears if there is a description only.

cool! but why doesn't it work on this page?
Posted 4 months ago. ( permalink )
Team ipernity pro replies:
It should work. Here are the rules:
- there is no "translate" link if the text is written in the same language you use to browse ipernity
- there is no "translate" link if we cannot detect the language or if the detected language is not supported by Google Translate
- there is sometimes a delay (a few minutes) between the moment when a comment is posted, and the moment when the "translate" link appears. This delay depends on the availability of Google Translate services.

ya pas mal de techniques, mais je pense que le plus simple est la reconnaissance de caractères spéciaux, l'occurrence de certaines lettres ou tout simplement l'apparition de certains mots.
d'ailleurs je viens de trouver un article là dessus sur Wikipedia, ainsi qu'un ptit testeur en ligne si ca t'intéresse.
Par contre je ne sais pas exactement sur quel technique de reconnaissance est basé l'algo qu'utilise iper.

Is it possible to use the "lang" attribute on html-tags to differ languages within multilingual posts (see example) and comments like in the Unofficial ipernity Ideas and Wish Group and to so support translation?

e.g. <p lang="de">deutschsprachiger text</p>

nice idea - but the google quality is so bad - it´s not worth even spending a second on that...
Posted 4 months ago. ( permalink )
Pandarine pro replies:
I wouldn't put it that harsh.

It's extremely bad between German and English, because so many words in German have different meanings (i.e. Hahn, which could be either a rooster or a faucet). But if you use it to understand the general context of a comment, it could be a welcome feature.
Posted 4 months ago. ( permalink )
Christophe Ruelle pro replies:
Yes Pandarine, it's just a simple feature thats helps to understand the general context of a comment just as you said.
Sometimes google translation is realy amazing.
Anyway, there was no intention to provide a perfect translation here. We rely on google and we show where the translation comes from because it's not our job.
I understand your point of view and I also understand that you think it's quite usefull for some people and in some cases. We know the limits and we hope everyone does. Anyway, it help right?

Door woorden als 'zus en zo' te gebruiken, levert vanzelf al gekke vertalingen op. Als je er bij het schrijven rekening mee houdt en uitdrukkingen en afkortingen vermijdt, dan zal de vertaling vanzelf ook beter worden.
