From what I have seen of ipernity so far you will do a better job of groups than flickr.
I would like to see the ability for groups to have "associations" with other groups, like users have contacts.

What interests me though is in what way would this feature be useful for the group's members e.g. would it only serve as a series of links to related groups or maybe members could view a feed of discussions taking place in related groups.
David de Groot replies:
So for instance (and I'll use Tux's example):
Brisbane
-* Brisbane Meetup
--* Brisbane Grid Project
-* Brisbane Wildlife
-* Brisbane History
etc...

Think about ipernity-groups - it is not necessary to clone flickr-groups. Some things there are annoying

But please do not duplicate Flickr-style groups. As someone said above, they can be quite annoying.
How about creating an admin setting for group member limits? How about an admin setting for not allowing photos added to a group unless they are tagged with whatever the admin allows? And even further, how about a setting for limiting membership to a certain geographic region (determined by the user's city/state/province etc)?
This site rocks, keep up the great service and work. I'm inviting everyone I know! :)

And since im a ex-flickr could you, when you have the time - dont stress :)
Make some way of grouping albums ? Or even better, just make and album a collection of either pictures or albums, at the same level. That way users can nest it as they see fit.
Thanks and keep up the good work

For sure, the "groups" function can be a great feature but as seen in other famous communities (don't want to use the F*r word ;) pictures are spread around in all kind of groups and some superlarge groups with hundreds of new pictures per day without a special "theme" exists.
So I'm really afraid that this "group flooder mentality" will also settle in here (I even don't want to think of "group invitations" or "groups awards" in my pictures comments ... could become a nightmare).
Maybe just my opinion ...
